Book Reviews
Listed below are my book recommendations for various levels of Access user.
All of these books have been read by myself and I highly recommend. I have not
listed any books that I do not recommend. This is so you don't get confused. If
you find the reviews useful then let me know and I'll add more.
| Book of the Month Access 2000 Developer's
Handbook Set (Paul Litwin, Ken Getz, Mike Gilbert)
|
Level -
Intermediate to Advanced. Recommended reader, anyone who has a good
knowledge of access and now wants to learn the crazy stuffGive
good coverage over fewer topics so you get a chance to look more in depth
at particular subjects. This helps as a lot of books tend to be a too
little too often, and it's nice to see the authors take their time. If you
have found other books difficult when trying to learn advanced topics try
this one. Comes with two CD's packed full of code examples. |

| Highly Recommended Guide to Access 2000
Programming (Peter Norton, Sams)
|
Level -
Beginner to Intermediate. Recommended reader, anyone who has basic Access
skills and now needs to unleash the real power of Access. This book is
great for anyone who is starting out with programming and are in an Access
2000 environment. I would not recommend it if you have already read Access
97 as there are not many major programming differences. In fact if you are
considering buying Access 97 programming you may better off buying this
book instead and ready yourself for the next version. (It's also a bit
cheaper) |

| Highly Recommended Teach Yourself Active
Server Pages in 24 Hours (Willie & Koller, Sams)
|
Level
- Intermediate to Advanced. Recommended reader, anyone who needs to learn
ASP in a hurry.
So your boss has asked you to provide an internet front end to that
neat Access database you’ve just finished. "No Problem" you
say and run the Access wizards to convert documents to web pages. The only
problem with this is that they don’t quite do what you want and don’t
really work over the internet. Looks like you're gonna have to learn about
Active Server Pages.
The Sams teach yourself guide is ideal for just such a time. Clearly
laid out with lots of relevant answers it’ll have you up to speed in no
time.
Because of the clear chapter layout you don’t even need to take
24hours. Simply read the chapters you need to get the job done, download
the example code from the website, modify it to match your system and bobs
your uncle! PS this is very cheap at amazon at the moment. |

| Book of the Month Febuary ADO 2.1 Programmers
Reference (Dave Sussman, Wrox)
|
Level - Intermediate
to Advanced. Recommended reader, anyone who needs to learn ActiveX data objects.
Why buy this book. This gets straight to the nitty gritty from page one. If
you need to pickup this subject fast then this is the book for you. One of the
best features of this book is the reference guide style to the back half. Books
normally comes as reference guides or trainers. This book is both which is why I
am recommending it. Value for money , content and style I don't think it can be
beaten. |

| Bargain Buy
Visual Basic 6 Complete (Various, Sybex) |
Level - Basic to Advanced. Recommended reader, anyone who needs to learn
Visual Basic 6 and doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg for a book..Why buy this book.
This book has an RRP of $20 and amazon is selling it at less than that. The
paper is of low quality, but the Complete series from Sybex are a complete
bargain as they are the gleaned wisdom of four other "Normal
Priced" Sybex books. The reference guide at the back is usefull when you
have finished and it does cover most of the important topics. It's only downside
is it does skim over one or two things, but at this price you can't go wrong. |

| My Favorite Guide to Access 97 Programming (Peter
Norton, Sams)
|
Level -
Beginner to Intermediate. Recommended reader, anyone who wants to get into
programming with Access 97.
This is the book with which I started my
Access programming life, and I would not have changed my choice one bit.
It is so well laid out that you will wonder why all books about Access do
not follow this format. Some great examples of real world apps. |
